I have been thinking about writing this article for some time. The original idea came from various posts on the nanaplaza.com message board asking about various sexual options, as well as the periodic emails I get on the lines of "how do I get laid in Pattaya?" I am always tempted to reply: "Surely you mean how do I not get laid in Pattaya?" Of course, there are no sex tourists in Thailand! It is just the bar girls are very friendly and, as Nightmarch (asiabugle newsletter) would say, gogo girls are not adverse to a bit of horizontal folk dancing!

There is a real difference, in most cases, between prostitution in the West and the friendly ladies here. Okay, if you go into a massage parlour or a brothel then price is discussed before the event. However, in the bar/gogo scene, money is very seldom even mentioned. A fixed bar fine is paid and the lady goes with you. In the morning, or when she leaves if she was there for just a 'short time', you give her a 'gift'. And that is the way many girls like to see it.

If your 'gift' is not enough then a discussion (which can quickly turn nasty) will take place. However, providing you know the rates you will get a little wai and off she'll go. Rates are always a difficult subject. I normally pay upwards of Bt1,000 according to several personal factors. It is rare that I give the minimum Bt1,000 and will go as high as Bt1,500. However, my normal thinking is that Bt1,200 plus motorbike home, plus money for food that day is about fair. I know one regular Nana person who reckons that anything less than Bt1,500 is mean. Well maybe I'm mean, but I have never had a return joust rejected!

I mentioned bar fines, and that assumes the romantic encounter started in a bar and the girl works for that organisation. Freelancers, who owe no allegiance to any bar, can be readily procured and come without the usual contribution to overheads.
Discos and some late night bars are their preferred haunt. There are also girls to be found on the street though I don't recommend going with such ladies as encounters with them often lead to trouble.

Even freelancers in discos can be a problem. If you wake up in the morning and your wallet has gone walkabout, there is little you can do about it. If your dancing partner happened to come from a bar, however, recourse (revenge) may be possible with the mamasan or owner, assuming you paid the bar fine.
Many tourists, only here for the beach and temples, inadvertently allow their mind to drift towards their sexual fantasies. It's too much staring at coconut palms that does it! Resolving those fantasies is possible, but not quite as simple as you may think. Recently, an acquaintance suffered a heart attack after a night spent in search of fantasy. Knowing the guy was a reasonably fit person, I asked him what on earth he had done. "Two Viagra, two ecstasy and five eighteen-year-olds," was his reply. He may just have deserved it, but I suppose it's not a bad way to go! He is now fully recovered, and interestingly his doctors, while warning him off the ecstasy, said the Viagra was okay!

I do not use drugs and never have, which is amazing considering the era I grew up in. When I was young, and experimental, I smoked and drank heavily and reasoned the last thing I needed was another vice. Now I have seen the effects of drugs and keep well clear. In LOS some drugs are readily available. The main stated reason for the current crackdown was to slow down the sale of yaba, a kind of speed which is endemic here. However, I would never take drugs in Thailand. If you are caught with a very small recreational amount, or are tested positive in the now frequent police raids, you maybe lucky and get a quick trip to the airport, manacled in a police van, and a one-way ticket out with a stamp in the passport saying don't bother to come back.

On the other hand, you could just as easily end up in jail for a number of years. Being caught with a large amount means jail is a certainty and a death sentence possible. Horizontal folk dancing involving more than one girl is also possible. In fact, you will often have mamsans suggest you take two girls. Everything gets doubled, but be warned, if you're thinking taking two girls guarantees you all kinds of sexual permutations. The usual trick is for one girl to spend long time in the bathroom while the other does the dancing. Then they will swap places. So, if you want lesbian scenes, make sure they are up for it before you pay the double bar fine.

I know one person who always tries to book two girls he sees doing a lesbian show together. However, that's not so easy in these crackdown days as such shows are much less frequent. I get quite a few questions about katoeys and were to find them. Personally, I find them in all the places I don't want to, like trying to pick my pocket as I trundle down Sukhumvit Road.

However, if you must, there are katoey bars, including two in Nana Plaza. The Crown Group's Obsession, at the back on the ground floor, seems to be the pick over Casanova on the first floor.
In Patpong there are more katoeys than many feel comfortable with. Kings Castle 3 is virtually katoey only, while Kings Corner also has more than its fair share. But be warned, many of the katoeys are not cut. They are, as they say, pre-op, if indeed they ever intend to have the op.
Also remember that despite the make-up and the protruding bits, katoeys are still men, with a man's strength.

Whatever TAT says, Thialand is a vast sexual playground with few real taboos, and it's not revolting sex tourists who started this, but the Thais themselves. The vast massage parlours in Rachadapisek are not geared up for farangs. In fact, foreigners are discriminated against and not really welcome. Up country, all towns have readily available sex for sale. In Bangkok there is one place that those with exotic tastes will want to go. It is the Eden Club in Sukhumnvit Soi 7/1. This place insists you to take a minimum of two girls at a time to their rooms, furthermore most fantasies are talked about and available. Needless to say this is a French-run operation, it being one of the few western countries with liberated views about sex. I know somebody will send me an email about STDs and Aids and whatever, but hey, we're all grown up people who know the risks and should know the precautions. Most good bars insist their girls have regular check-ups, making them a safer bet than the freelancers and, particularly, street girls who are much more likely to cause spots to appear in the wrong place. But in the end it's up to you!

Thailand is here to be enjoyed. You may come for the beaches or for the temples or for the golf, but do also take a look at the nightlife and maybe even treat yourself to a little horizontal folk dancing with a friendly bar girl.
She needs the gift, you have got the dough. So don't worry about the show!
